Access Softek Case Study

OmniSky

Access Softek creates a wireless Pocket PC service deployed by major US carriers.

Opportunity

OmniSky, a player in the wireless service provider arena, elected to extend their offerings supporting the Pocket PC platform to follow up on the success of their Palm platform support.

The measurements of success were software solutions that advanced the wireless industry by dominating the platform with ease of use, speed, and security.

Approach

This venture required an experienced team of software and quality assurance engineers with expertise in the CE operating system, which OmniSky did not house. Also a complete solution from conception, implementation, testing, to installation was needed.

Access Softek provided sophisticated solutions to complex problems and so the team of OmniSky Engineering, along with Access Softek Developers and QA collaborated to construct the set requirements.

Together we formulated the following basic requirements:

  • An Inbox e-mail that is client fast and easy to use.
  • A means to easily integrate information for the web to Outlook features.
  • An optimized e-mail service strictly designed for the convenience of wireless portable users.

We also agreed to these product requirements:

  • Meet or surpass standard wireless/internet end-to-end security.
  • Compatible with the major Pocket PCs, modems, and MS Windows OS's (98, 98SE, 2000, NT 4.0).

Access Softek began work using the following technologies along with incorporating Custom ActiveX controls with JavaScript interfaces on Windows CE:

  • Microsoft Pocket PC 2000
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0
  • eMbedded Visual C++
  • InstallShield Professional
  • Palm SDK
  • Metrowerks CodeWarrior 4.0.1.
  • Certicom's TrustPoint 128 PKI security libraries

The solution was certified under the follow hardware and client software by the Access Softek QA group:

  • HP Jornada 500 series
  • Compaq iPAQ 3000 series
  • Casio Cassiopeia
  • Palm PDA
  • Handspring PDA
  • Sierra Wireless AirCard 300 wireless CDPD modems
  • Novatel Wireless Merlin wireless CDPD modems
  • Enfora Pocket Spider wireless CDPD modems
  • Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, and NT 4.0
  • Outlook 98 and 2000.

Results

Our collaborative efforts produced the OmniSky 1.0 product line.

The OmniSky CorporateLink - A sophisticated mail-forwarding and synchronization application that allowed users to access their Outlook corporate e-mail from a handheld device. This was so successful and easy to use intervention from the user's IS/IT department was not needed.

OneTap - A solution that allowed users to save web information directly into their Contacts, Calendar, or Notes, without any cutting or pasting of text, and to instantly look up directions, maps, and nearby shopping for any address in their Contacts, Inbox, or on a web page. This tight integration of diverse applications provided a uniquely streamlined wireless experience.

OmniSky Mail - An optimized e-mail service collecting messages up to 300% faster than the standard Pocket PC POP3 e-mail client. OmniSky Mail extended the Pocket PC Inbox feature set to include filtering of messages based on customizable rules and selective forwarding of attachments directly from the server without downloading large files to the mobile device.
